Muffler? no muffler?
I'm older than dirt (and value what's left of my hearing) so I go with a muffler on my 4" system
last time I went shooting I had to crawl up to the top of a mountain and when I reached the staging area someone said "damm, I thought you were comin' up in a tractor"
I always have the oldest truck amongst my friends, nobody has ever challenged me to a bumper pull
one of the guys had a Harley-Davidson pickup (made by Cadillac, I believe). tries to look tough but it's a gasser made of plastic, and only has 2WD. the muffler is "tuned" so it produces exhaust rumble but it's nuthin compared to a CTD

Put a 5" on mine several years ago with the muffler. Sounded like a Ford, so I took it off. No problems with the PO-po's but my state inspector tells me it needs to be on each year...

I am here:
A few things to consider.
I have had:
Downpipe only exhaust,
3" to just after the cab
Stock exhaust
Straight piped stock
3" DP to 6" dual stacks, the tips just above the cab
3" DP to a single centered 4" turnout stack, the turnout just above the cab
4" diamond eye with muffler
By far, the meanest sounding one was the dual 6" stacks. The quietest one was the stock but the 4" turnout was a close one.
#1 in my books though is the 4" DE kit with muffler. Nice sound at idle, quiet at highway speeds, but romp on it at all and you knew who was "boss".
Also, for the one in TX saying you need a muffler, read your laws. IL has a clause where "A turbocharger is considered a 'muffling device'". I would think TX would have something like that.

Been running with only a downpipe for a while... getting tired of it. Will have a muffler in the future - a little less noise at highway cruise would be nice. Straight-thru type for sure. Also once less thing a cop could ticket and send me to inspection for.
I put the 4" Diamond eye (without muffler) on my truck this weekend. It fit perfectly, and was a breeze to install. The guys at Diamond eye make really nice stuff. I don't remember the last time I had aftermarket parts go so smooth.
It really snarls now. sounds great, pretty loud. Hopefully I'll stay out of trouble with it. I just had to try the straight pipe.
Also bumped the timing and messed with the afc. Turbo lights way quicker now

That's why I bought the cheepest 3 inch glasspack I could find ( want a DE exhaust but going to university in afew months) anyway had it straight piped but didn't like the looks the cops gave me so I figured hell if the glasspack burns out in a month ohwell I got a muffler under there bytches but it made it sound better then the straight pipe even.
I have found that the sound level can really only be managed with RPM, not throttle per say. When I was strait piped it was fine most of the time around town but I did find my self shifting early if I wasn't in the mood to hear it. The freeway was a whole other story. On the freeway strait pipe seriously detracts from drive-ability. There is one note that really buzzes the cab and it is right in that freeway cruising range. Add an incline and they extra pedal sends it over the top of annoying. Since I already had the strait pipe kit, I bought a Magnaflow muffler, I love the tone and it was a huge improvement in the cab
