More power?

Ok so I have a 12 valve in a 93 w250 with an automatic. bone stock.. I was wondering a cheap an effective way to boost up from 160hp. Keep in mind that i'm 17 and would need to save up for anything I would need to buy, but just wanted some opinions, anything would help. thanks in advance guys.

make sure you are getting full throttle on the pump when the pedal is on the floor, it sounds dumb but should be checked from time to time.

Also make sure the trans is shifting at the proper shift points, if your confident enough to get into transmission stuff then there is some good write ups in the sticky on tps and kickdown adjustments along with adjusting line pressure. a good working trans will improve your power to the ground but the adjustments to it need to be done correctly or it may hurt the life of the trans.

For more power start saving your money for a pyrometer so you can watch your engine temperature, then you can turn up your pump without melting your pistons. Some folks here run the glowshift 3in1 gauge, it seems like a cost effective way to monitor the engine. you get to pick the layout on the gauge for egt, pressure and temperature. I would suggest using it for egt and trans temp because those two can cause the most damage.

once you have the gauge then you can add more fuel with simple pump adjustments. the free pump adjustments will give you quite a bit more power.

ok, so I should buy a pyrometer before playing with my pump a little? cause ive been trying to find time to do it just haven't gotten to it yet. what would you think of a bigger fuel pin when I turn it up?

The safest way is to have the gauges in there to prevent any issues with heat. Sure you could turn it up a little and probably be fine but there are people on here with a melted piston for a paper weight to remind them not to make stupid decisions.

The fuel pin will add some power but if your on a budget then you can grind your stock fuel pin with a dremel tool to get more fuel. The stock pin can be rotated to a deeper setting too, so grind on that side.

this is an extremely good idea that I didn't think of. do you have any suggestions when I go to grind?

Do a search on it here and you can see photos of how to grind it. I'm on my phone or I would find it. You can see the other pins and how the slope gets deeper with the added boost. Grind slow and keep it smooth. Add some grease to the surface when your done.
