manual vs automatic
i have a 92 2wd with a blown getrag, so this body/running gear has everything for a standard. i also have a 93 4wd with an automatic (needs rebuilt). an adapter to bolt a nv4500 behind the old 12-valve, and a transfer case to bolt up behind the nv4500. what is the best option to go with and what else will be needed. looking to start on it within two weeks. thanks for the help.
Manual tranny is better. I got a 727 tranny which sucks because its a 3spd and I really want a 5spd but don't have the time to swap in a manual right now. Autos are nice for sitting in traffic but I would prefer a manual.
Are You asking getrag vs 1st gen autos or You plan to put a nv4500? The nv4500 sure is better as long as You take care of the 5th gear nut. I don't have any miles on the rebuild I did on My getrag but one thing I really like is how easy it is to rebuild this transmission, if it turn out good and it ever needs a rebuild again it is so simple I would gladly spend a couple hundred on a rebuild and do it My self instead of paying someone to rebuild another not so simple tranny for Me.
the getrags main shaft is broke along with a couple gears missing some teeth. the truck is going to be built for sled pulling when it is finished. as far as which transmission i use is up for suggestion. getrag, nv4500, or 46rh. i just cant decide which way to go. i would prefer the nv4500 but i dont know what else it is going to take to get it in the truck. will everything for the clutch out of the getrag work?? exp: slave/master cylinder. the clutch itself is smoked so it will have to be replaced. thanks guys

If your bellhousing/adapter for the NV4500 are from a 2nd gen truck you will need the clutch master/slave cyl set up from a 2nd gen truck. If you have one of the aftermarket bellhousings like Advance Adaper or Quad 4x4 the 1st gen stuff will work. Clutches are interchangable as long as the input shaft has not been upgraded to the 1 3/8" shaft which is not a bad upgrade for a puller especially if you need to buy a clutch anyway. You will also need to make a spacer for the transmission crossmember and tweak the transfer case shifter bracket and linkage if you have a 1st gen NP 205 transfer case.
i have an adapter from advanced adapters to bolt up the nv4500. i will need to measure the input shaft. where can the larger shaft be purchased from? what would it take to put a 13" clutch in this pickuo. would i need a flywheel out of a 6 spd? thanks
I know Quad 4x4 in Roberts Montana used to carry the input and expect they still do and I'm sure other performance off road places have them as well. If I remember there is a website called nv4500.com that has a lot of parts and info on the nv4500. If your going to street drive with the 4500 I would suggest going to the fully splined mainshaft and other trinkets to prevent the 5th gear from falling off. I do however agree that the Getrag is a tough trans if you keep it overfilled with motor oil. The clutch in the 92 should be a 13" sachs unit if it has not been changed but if you are going to pull seriously most guys go with a double disc clutch and I'm not sure if you need to change flywheels or if you can get a DD to go on the stock flywheel. You can search this site for clutch and NV4500 conversions and get other opinions too.
too bad the timing is off right now because in the next few months I'm yanking my getrag and installing a built auto. I'm going more for a 12 second beater than tow rig and my getrag is still shifting like new. Must be the RP fluids. lol
