Lower door hinges are available!

Picked up a new lower door hinge this morning from Swift Dodge and the parts guy told me there are 930 of them at the main warehouse, so get 'em while you can. I remember checking sometime last year and they were out of stock, so I guess they had a run of them made.

I paid about $75 including my car club discount and sales tax. It's worth it to have a door that opens and closes smoothly. Those hinge repair kits never seem to last.

I got lucky on my door hinges. A guy walked in the shop while I was working on my 93 said he had gone by several times and saw us working on an old Dodge truck. Handed me a sack with both upper and lower hinges. He had bought them for his truck but wrecked it before he got them on. Then the best deal was he still had the wrecked truck and I got it for 3 hours welding on his tractor mower. I'm glad some things are still available for our old trucks.

Replaced my drivers side lower hinge today. What a difference! The holes the pin goes through in the old hinge was wallowed out to over double its original size. Door closes nice and smoothly now.

My lower door hinge mount is broken on the door side. At some point it broke free from the door and the PO tried to weld it up. It didn't work very well, now I am waiting for the welds to completely break and the door to fall off!. I will post up some pics once I remember to take them.

deerslayer1979 you can reweld it. I did a friends truck. I cut a plate for the inside for extra bracing made it a little larger then drilled holes on the outside to get extra weld on the plate inside. It was a pain to fit the plate inside due to the plate that was in there for the bolts. If I had to do it over i'd cut that section out repair it then weld it back in. But doors are cheap too at the junkyard. Good luck with it.

My drivers door has early signs of this kind of wear. The skin around where the hinge mounts to the door has a tear right along the inside edge of the hinge. I made up a piece of sheet metal that I put between the hinge and the door and I'm going to rivet it (with structural rivets) or drill some holes and weld through it, to the door skin to try to slow the destruction.

I have a decent donor door I will grab the hinge and surrounding metal. Then I will just reweld that into where the old one was.
