Lost Speedometer, Mileage, Over drive, cruise, & Alt
All these things just stopped working. I replaced the vehicle speed sensor right at the back of the transmission yesterday to no avail. I saw on another thread which is for the 94's & up that it could likely be the crankshaft position sensor. I've got a '92
Where is the crankshaft position sensor located? Is it the one couple inches below and to the left of the fuel filter? (Drivers side) The truck also, sometimes, when driving a rough road just dies... and I coast for about 50' then it just comes back on like normal. This may be related to the same problem or a whole different animal. |
The crank sensor is located right above your harmonic balancer.
I've also had the problem with dying and coming back to life as you describe. That turned out to be the wire going to the fuel shutoff soleniod, a ring connector fixed that. |

Thanks for your replies! If it'll quit raining... I'll go outside & check that ol' connection on the fuel shutoff selenoid!
Please don't laugh... I'm a much better sawyer than a mechanic [laugh] The harmonic balancer is that BIG round thing in line with the belt on the front of the motor at the bottom, roughly 10" in diameter correct? If so, I remember seeing a connection going to what I figure is a sensor down there... sitting right on top of what I believe is the harmonic balancer... and I was sure hopin that wasn't it because it really looked like a pain in the butt to get to! most problems with the crank sensor are due to worn insulation or broken wires where the harness comes up the front of the engine and around the head.

Heat and vibration. The other major cause is when the fan belt comes apart...
