Looking to buy a first gen
Hey guys just joined and am looking at getting a first gen pickup. Im looking for a 5sp 4x4, what can I look at to tell if its been properly taken care of? Is there any problems to watch for on these that are expensive to fix? I'm almost sure I want a ex. cab long bed but am looking to make sure. Where could I run across a set of good used air seats and how would I go about hooking them up?
Thanks,
Mack

If you have some spare time, browse through the old posts on first gens. Bushy has given a couple of good lists. They weren't too long ago. I'd do a list for ya, but haven't had mine a year yet and might leave something out. I think the biggest concerns of any vehicle is the condition of the cooling system(has it ever overheated), and how much towing has been done. I wouldn't worry too much about the transmission, after you've been here a while, your gonna get the urge to upgrade it anyway

Don

basically a lot of the normal things you'd look for on a truck with most likely over 100k on the clock

You may be looking a long time for a 5spd 4wd club cab, there aren't very many. I did find 2 while i was looking, but they wanted 11k and 9k for them. they were a little nicer condition than my reg cab, but i only paid 4200 for it

Re:Looking to buy a first gen
well, from the ones we've had, if it's runnin, the cummins is fine =)

seriously, even one that's down on power probably just needs a 'tune up/turn up', made a huge difference in power on my truck and gave me 2mpg gain. Unless one has been turned up a lot, u should really see it smoke. ours have always blue smoked in the winter while warming up, but not once warm. and with stock pump settings, we never had one black smoke. turned up is a different story
