Lift pump
This may have been talked about but gonna ask again, looking for a different lif pump for my ole 93 which is pretty well stock other than a fuel pin it currently still working but wanna replace before I have to replace it at a inconvient time, would be better to go with a piston type?

Get a HVLP lift pump.
Yes it is an upgrade worth doing. |
can you get those hvlp direct from cummins or do the have to be detuned for pressure so you don't hurt injection pump?

I order the proper LOW pressure piston pump along with the few parts needed to install it from The Hungry Diesel myself.
If you order it from Cummins you have to be sure you don't get a P-pumped LP that runs a much higher fuel pressure and will damage you injection pump. |
the reason I ask is because I work for cummins up in Canada and can get a great deal on parts but my parts people are sub par and unless it is under the serial number it dosent exist in their world

From the sticky, I found these numbers. Called cummins and quoted pricing for me.
Called cummins to price all the parts to swap over to the HVLP pump. Here's what they said: (2) 3918191 seals (new number 3963983) $2.45 each (1) 3914753 Fuel tube $ 42.56 (1) 3936320 Fuel pump (new number 4988751) $116.53 (2) 3931348 gaskets $4.47 each (1) 3914284 spacer $16.62 Total for all parts $ 189.55 plus tax I'll be ordering mine after the new year |
Under NO circumstances should you put a piston pump on your VE injection pump truck unless the seller guarantees the pressure is OK for the VE. You can test the pressure of a piston pump by attaching a fuel pressure gauge to the output port and dipping the input into a jar of fuel. The pump should be primed with fuel BTW. Then press the pushrod a few times, NOT the priming button, until the reading on the gauge stabilizes. This will be the maximum pressure you can get out of that pump.
My pump from Nascar Mark was set at 15 psi IIRC. I used a pump I bought off Amazon which put out over 35 psi and it popped the front seal out of my VE injection pump and filled the crankcase with about 5 gallons of fuel while I was going down the 91 freeway in Corona CA. Had to be towed home and do a whole bunch or work to get that straightened out. Edwin |

Your sub par Cummins parts guys should be able to work with that. |

Thanks for the replys those are good parts numbers will be ordering that stuff today, looks like should be able to get everything for about 140 Canadian so a cheap upgrade

Again, I urge you to "trust but verify" the pressure of your new pump if you have a VE injection pump. Otherwise your oil could be way overfull and smell like diesel. Edwin |
So you know, your getting some bad info here. 3936320 Fuel pump (new number 4988751) is NOT a HVLP pump.
