KSB swapping
 
I have searched and read just about every post on here about KSB's. Can't find a single factual answer, so here goes.

I just bought an 89 non I/C truck, and I don't trust the early style of KSB. There is no fail safe. I want to put an I/C style KSB on it and have a toggle switch control it.

My question is, can I simply pull the entire KSB assembly off of each Injector Pump, and swap them? It's simply a tiny fuel line, and 2 torx bolts. Or is there more to it?

I have diesel mechanic guys telling me that they can't be swapped. That the pump would have to be recalibrated because they have different advance curves. That it would run like **** and overheat the fuel.

This makes no sense to me because all it is is a tiny ball valve that is a vent for internal pump pressure. Open or Close, that's it. Take one ball valve off, put a different ball valve on. The only difference is how they get power.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm sure some of you out there know more about it. And hopefully someone has done such a swap.

I researched this quite a bit a while ago. I went the other way, non i/c to i/c. Since my truck is a 1990 and will control the KSB opposite of a '91.5+ truck, I was considering swapping just the solenoids. What info I found was that the threads are the same. My only remaining concern was the internals of the KSB body itself. Are they similar or do they vary slightly? If similar, simply swap the solenoids and wire it as you wish.

Swapping the bodies is definitely an easy swap. However, the steel line from the control valve in the top of the pump is a different length for both. I'd say if you could get the steel line from the i/c pump, then just swap over the KSB body and solenoid from it as well.

I have had both Non-IC and IC IP apart and they appear to be the same...at least visually.
