KSB Problems

I think my KSB solenoid is bad. Runs poorly below 20 degrees until it is warm. I put 12 volts to the solenoid...no change. Should I be able to here the solenoid click when voltage is applied? I called my dealer and they said they thought it was no longer available. Last price was over 500.00. I called Cummings and they said probably will have to go to Bosch to get one...not much help either. Anyone have a supplier or a part number that maybe valid for a 1992 W-250? Any suggestions on verifying solenoid is bad?

My Cummins book says you can unscrew the solenoid from the housing and hook it up to 12 volts (the nut part is ground). The plunger should extend when 12 volts is applied. If the plunger works, try cleaning the pressure release valve. The valve is on the other end of the KSB housing. Unscrew it from the pump and flush it out with carb cleaner. Poke the check ball in the end of the valve with a small allen wrench or similar non-sharp pokey thing and make sure it's not sticking. All should be OK if the plunger moves with 12 volts and the valve is clean. If the solenoid is bad, try a VW/Audi dealer for it. AFAIK the VE pumps VW used had KSB as well, and they have shutoff solenoids cheaper than anybody else. You don't want the wax motor KSB solenoid - those are long and skinny so they would be hard to confuse with what you have.

Get me your pump number - I've got a possible source for one but they require the pump number. It is located on the bottom of the pump.

The only numbers I could find are on a plate on the side of it. It identifies it as a Chrysler remanufactured part: R4728745 and below that M092001014. Thanks for the help you guys.
