KDP info!
KDP info!
All,
This past weekend I killed the KDP, but buggered up the crank seal. I tried installing the seal on the gear cover without using the plastic install tool. Stupid me
I ruined a $30 seal
So, I have a new seal on the way from NAPA.
1st question - the plastic install tool for the crank seal has a widened end on one side (like a pilgram rifle, trumpet shaped), I assume this is what will be facing the crank when you install the seal on the crank cover? Once the cover and seal are on, and you start putting the timing cover bolts on (when the cover is snugged down), will the plastic crank seal tool then come off the crank shaft snout?
2nd question - I know with a gasser, you need to properly align the timing marks on the crank pulley, with TDC on install, in order to time the engine properly. On my 93 W250 there appears to be 3 line marks on the crank pulley - TDC (center mark), and a mark to the left and right of the TDC mark. Do I have to worry about proper install of the crank pulley (concerning the timing marks), or do I just bolt on the crank pulley, without concern for the marks on the crank pulley and TDC? Do I need to align the timing marks on the timing gears, then install the crank pulley with the TDC mark aligned on the crank pulley. I know I am probably making this more complicated than need be
Any help is appreciated!!!

I did the same thing! I was upset when I learned another front main was going to be $40. Oh well, lesson learned. When I used the plastic piece, the wide part did face the engine. Cranked the cover bolts down, pulled out the plastic piece and no leaks in 2000 miles or so.
There is no timing with the crank pulley. Don't confuse yourself with any of that TDC stuff, just bolt it on.

Bikes,
Thanks much for the input! I figured I was out in 'left field' regarding the timing and crank pulley
Yeah, I was really bumed about destroying the crank seal
The worst part is, I had the darn plastic seal tool and thought I didn't need it. Lesson learned!!!!

. The TST kit I bought didn't really have clear instructions on the front main install, so I just installed it like I would a regular toyota front main. Oh well, it could have been a more expensive lesson
.
Yeah,
TST could have explained the plastic crank seal install tool - a little better in their instructions in the KDP kit. I also thought it was some kind of packaging for the seal

Same here with the plastic install ring. Even after reading all the info I could on the issue, I still managed to confuse the proper way to install the cover with the new seal. You would think that buying the seal from CUMMINS would come with a simple illustration showing the purpose of this plastic ring. All this aside, I was successfully able to kill the dowel pin. For all you do it yourselfers, this is a relatively simple task. Not the ordeal I thought it was going to be.
