Wink the benefit of good maintanence

Having just got my truck, and it being -25* outside, and me not having a heated shop to work in, and maybe just being plain lazy sometimes, I decided to take the truck to a quicky lube to get all the fluids freshened up.

When I first got the truck I had to drive it about 180 miles home, during which time I noticed an annoying vibration in the transfer case shifter. It wasnt that bad at cruise but when I stepped into it on a hill it got quite a bit worse.

well Ilm not sure whether it was the fresh lube in the diffs or the transfer case, or even the transmission, but whatever it was, the noise is gone. It really made a big difference... what little noise it makes now sounds almost like it would have new. kind of surprising but true!

also good news, the transmission pan had very little in the way of metal particles and next to no sludge.

also had some 0-rings replaced in the injector pump.

next to check the brks and u-joints slip yokes etc.

might freshen up the tires too.

shouldnt be too much longer before its ready for the highway again.

tks,
rjm

Good to hear! Theres nothing like the proper lubrication for the job. Sounds like the old lube wasent handeling it anymore, or what was left of it!

Since you've done all this work, might wanna check out your lift pump, too. I had the stocker on mine, and when I put on the piston style pump the injection pump got MUCH quieter! I think the old lift pump just couldn't pump enough to properly lubricate the VE.

I was thinking of this my-self. I need to change all the fluids.

Also, regarding the lift pump... will be looking into replacing mine up to something better like Ilikebikes.

thanks, btw what exactly is the "lift pump", is that equivalent of the fuel pump on a gasser? works off the camshaft or somehting like that?

also, the mechanic who replaced the leaky 0-rings in the injector pump warned me that if it ever started running really rough off idle and didnt smooth out till higher rpm, to get that pump in to a shop quickly... something about breaking springs?

tks,
rjm

Not too sure about the rough running off idle. Mine runs rough everyone once in awhile after a hard, WOT pull, but clears up after a few seconds.

The lift pump is pretty much just like a fuel pump on a gasser. Search this forum for "piston lift pump" and you'll find a thread about it. There was a guy on ebay selling brand new ones for $45 (I think), but I'm not sure if he has anymore. I think the regular price from Cummins is $100+.

Never held about the rough running part about breaking springs, but I've had it happen. Truck shut off on me, after several tries I got it going and got it home. I have another pump at home that self destructed when the springs broke into several pieces.
