intermittent power

I was heading out of town today in my 93 auto, and i went to pass a slowe moving dump truck and i had no power. I put the pedal to the floor and just watched a crazy thick cloud of smoke dumpin out of my pipe. I then just stayed behind the dump truck for a while and tryed again, this time the truck jumped right up and got rolling just like normal. A little later on i pulled up to a stop light and when i came to a stop my truck was shaking violently and running rough, so i popped it in neutral and it idled fine. When the light went green i put it in gear, i was shaking again and i hit the gas to take off it just started creeping foward and dumped more smoke than a freight train even with the throttle almost wide open. I knew somthing was very wrong at this point so i pulled over and check for any thing out of the ordinary and didnt see anything. truck revd perfectly in park so i got in and took off, and it was fine. It done this acting up about 4 or 5 more times before i got home, but it is on and off, everything will be fine one min and then no warning it will act up again. I couldnt even get over a curb at WOT. Anyone else ever have this problem? I dont even know where to start.

Sounds like tranny to me or torque converter are your rpms normal or not?

I would start by removing the air inlet hose from the turbo. If the turbo is in bad shape, two things can happen. It can intermittently jam up in a locked position(effectively plugging the exhaust) and it can dump oil into either side of the turbo.
If the turbo is good, I would look into nozzles next.

I to suspect a turbo problem. I don't see the tranny having much to do with smoking at a stop

Flash....zap....wake up self.

I had a drastic turndown of power from a stop once. Quickly determined it was the pacbrake stuck shut. It was night time so I don't know if I was smoking or not.

it does rev up and if i down shift and let it wind out a little it seems to pull ok,. If the turbo is bad what are the signs i need to check for first? x2 on tranny or nozzles?

take the intake tube off and spin the impeller (engine off). if the bearings don't feel smooth, its bad. if that's ok, push and pull on the impeller, there should be little play if any. Also look for signs the impeller hit housing.

I would still lean towards not enough air. Have you checked the air filter yet? Can you hear the turbo spooling?

spools nice got a k&n filter and it ran the same with the filter off. And it only acts up at low rpm once i get into higher rpm is runs fine. i also noticed it dosnt act up as much when its cold as the truck warms up it acts up more often. i am at a loss and i dont know where to go from here. the guy at a injection shop told me over the phone that it is a pump problem but he said that usally a pump problem woulnt change back and forth , it would just run like garbage all the time
