Installed valve guide seals, now they leak...

Hey guys, I recently installed 60# valve springs, figured I should do the valve seals while I was at it. I used cummins 3921640 seals. Used a deep socket on a 1/4 hand driver and pushed them on with a bit of vaseline. Pushed hard but no hammering etc; I thought the install went well :(

Did not leak before, but has classic symptoms of leaking valve seals; only smokes after idling for at least a minute then getting on it smokes BLUE... Smells like burning engine oil. Oil around the exhaust manifold gaskets.

I'm wondering if I missed something or if the seals are not for pre 94? (doubtful I know).

I popped the valve covers off and the seals looked ok, not riding up etc. I even tried to pry some back down to no avail.

Has about 8K miles since doing the springs and seals.

Thanks in advance.

You may have cut one or more during the install. I used to see this a lot back in high school, guys would get the lip of the seal over the end of the valve but forget about the keeper groove and cut almost every one of them.

Are you supposed to slide a protective sleeve over the valve? I just slowly worked the seals down over the keeper edge with my fingers while rotating them.

yes on the sleeve. It should have come with the box of seals.

Dammit, they just came in a bag, no sleeve. I thought of using some shrink tube or something but figured it was just slide them carefully on. Im super meticulous and read my eyes off about the install, nothing.

Hopefully this finds others doing the job, when I rebuild engines my machine shop buddy does the heads so I had no idea. No mention in the dodge manual...

Gotta do that job again, yay lol

I used to use aluminum foil wrapped around the valve stem with vaseline as assembly lube.

aren't these supposed to go on dry?

I would think vaseline may be too slippery and over time cause them to lift off their seat?
