Install Aftermarket Tach 1st Gen?
If your truck is a '91.5 ~ '93, then you have a factory provided plug under the steering column that will give 12vdc power, lights, and tach signal from the ECM.

With that, you can connect directly to an ISSPRO R5503 (0 ~ 4000rpm).
I mounted mine on the column . . .

Here's a write-up I did on my install . . . https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/....html?t=173561
Hope this helps.
Be sure to fill out your "Sig" so folks will know what king of truck you're messing with and be sure to stop in the 1st gen section for help direct from 1st gen owners. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...opics-f93.html

It seems there's those that reference the alternator, or a magnet on the crankshaft damper, or strap to one of the injector lines and feels the pulse of the injection event.
Take your pick. Check with your favorite vendor and see what's available (I've no experience with them
).
If you want, I can move this thread to the 1st gen section for more reply's.

I have looked into the injector pulse pick up and it wont work, the magnets i don't want to deal with but the altenator is what I was thinking but I have heard the aren't to accurate? Where do you get the altenator pick-up or I think they are an inductive pick-up? Need help?

You can install a mechanical tachometer that runs off the front of the injection pump through the timing case, with the drive adapter you can either use a mechanical head with a flexible cable like your speedometer cable or it can turn a tach generator and connect the tach head electrically.
Or you can install an electric tachometer that connects directly to the alternators stator windings, if you have the stock Nippondenso alternator you will have to add the connection to the alternator but if you install a Leece Neville then it already has them.
This type of tachometer is used on Class-8 tractors and is used on marine applications including diesel powered yachts.

Autometer 2888 (I think) works great, super easy install. Pick up goes around your altenator with a large "hose clamp". Clamp it on, wire up lights, 12v power, and pick up and ground I think and your good to go. There is a zeroing screw on the back to adjust it (I gues the span is already set). I just held it to the floor in neutral on my completely stock truck and tuned it in for 2700rpm. When it came back to idle in park it was 750, put it in drive and it was 700rpm, just like it's supposed to be. You can also dial in your zero with an optical tach, or the type you hold on the pulleys and just compensate for size of pulleys.
