Ignition problems
 

Hello all,
While working on the injection pump on my '91, I pulled the ignition start-run relay and hooked up a push button so I could turn the engine over from under the hood. I then stupidly left the relay upside down, and it got rained on. I didn't realize this and put it back in, which of course didn't work. I've replaced the relay, but still no starter action. I'm guessing (hoping) it blew a fusible link. Any suggestions on where to look, or ideas about what else might be going on?

Does the engine crank and not start or does it not even crank.

Got power to the starter when the key is turned? Is it an auto or a stick?

Automatic, has power to everything, but does not have power to starter when key is turned. I can crank engine with a jumper from battery to ignition pole on starter (same momentary push-button switch). When I hit start on key, the various "start" indicators" on dash light up, but the ammeter is not dragged down, buzzers and lights don't dim.

my truck did the same thing, so i fixed it the red neck way and hooked up a switch in the cab,

That is certainly an option, and I already have the switch, but I would really prefer to have the actual ignition switch work. Any suggestions, anyone?

Auto or stick? Check the neutral safety switch or clutch switch.

Auto, as mentioned earlier, and shifter hasn't moved in, well, some time. Additionally, when the (old) ignition start-run relay was reinstalled, it did pull down ammeter and other indicators (buzzer, lights), until it shorted out (no starter, but battery was a little low at the time).

All the fusible links are on the fender by the battery. If you can't find a crispy one, throw the ignition switch at it.

Where is this Relay you are referring to? I am assuming you have a 91.5
Have you tried to simply replace the relay?

Make a test light out of a small 194 lamp of similar and insert the probes into Term #85 & Term #86 of the relay socket and then turn the key and see if the lamp will light up, if it does then the switching and interlock circuits are working.

If you jumper Term #30 & Term #87 the engine should crank.

If I am reading the schematic correctly, someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Here is what I did to my ignition switch.
It feels more proper than the key; I rarely go for the key anymore.
When I pull into a drive through, it shuts down the engine without restarting my DVD that is playing.
