IFP o-ring question

I pulled my pump last week because of a leak and found this.

The question is what do you think caused this? Is this a common occurence?
Also what is that that the o-ring is sealing?

Thanks.

Was the whole cover missing?

It's not uncommon for them to spring a leak there, put a new o-ring in and drive.

That's the backside of the timing piston.

No the cover was there, I took it off because it was the only wet spot. I figure it would be leaking worse than it was if the cover was gone. Then again...
I bought a whole new pump to replace it. Guess I didn't need it.
Would this leaking affect anything else? Would I lose power or anything like that or damage anything?

Thanks.

It should run OK with the leak, just could be hard to get started if it sat a while.
