Question if fuel = hp does air = mpg?

Hi all ;So with the rising cost of fuel and the perdicted spikes lets talk about how to get better mpg from the old girls. now
i know for a fact that with my 2 mods ..4in ex and bhaf i have no smoke and better mpg all ready so the ques 1 /driving at lower speeds in the sweet spot ie will the 5.9 yield better mpg running in d or 4th for slow city /urban driving 2/will timing advance help 3/ a faster spooling housing [14 /16] inprove it . 4/fuel additives ie howes meaner cleaner .etc etc etc

Obviously the less smoke you give off the more that's being burned. And the more thats being burned the less that's being wasted. So if you can use less fuel to do the same job then yes better fuel economy.

Fuel + Air = HP. Best upgrade for mpg's is injectors hands down. Next in line is the right foot.

I'd stay away from injectors... PODs DO suck more fuel as well as EDM's...

The guru's will tell you how it's done

Injectors will actually make mpg go up , because they atomize the fuel better , this only holds true if you can keep your right foot light.

^^^185 and 190's maybe but when you have things like PODs that 'over inject' even at idle(some call this hazing) then you are wasting fuel.

1: Let it shift into whatever gear it wants to be in. With light loads the slower the engine turns for a given road speed, the less fuel you will use.

2: Yes.

3: If you run mostly in town, yes. If you tow a lot of the time and/or run mostly on highways, the bigger housings will give better economy.

4: Ones that claim a cetane boost may help a little. Higher cetane is like advanced timing.

For good MPG you want free flow of air and exhaust so the engine does not have to waste power pushing and pulling the air through. A BHAF and a straight pipe exhaust are good for mileage.

My last trip up to PDR Dyno Mania 2004 from Portland OR and back My MPG was 23.5 - this is with my current setup. I stayed at the speed limit - 75 mph for about 75 to 100 miles and the rest at about 60 mph using my cruise control most of the time. I can blot out the sun when I want to but only do that on rare ocassions. I would really like to run the whole trip at 55 - 60 mph to see what numbers come up but I want to get there the same day I leave My current mileage average - mostly in town is 18.0 to 18.5. I think your right foot is the best mileage control you've got. I keep the smoke down around town by using my right foot. Just my $.02 worth.

Bob

hmm now with the old carbed gassers a good working 350 4 barrel would give you better mpg than a 2 bbl if you were easy on the stick and ran on the primarys with the secondarys in reserve to haul a#$............. so are you saying the better grade injs give you better mpg[with a lite foot ] and still have all the extra ponies for the hills ok which injectors i needs to know allso what other mods do you need with these injectors

I also think that those of us with auto's and the stock torque converters could pick up some mileage with the 89% lock-up converters.I believe that mine slips quite a bit at 240k.

190's are a good all-around injector that won't hurt mileage if you keep your foot out of it. POD's don't hurt mileage on the highway, but they will drop your in-town mileage by a couple mpg no matter how clean you try to drive. Bob has DD3+ injectors, which are a custom injector from Diesel Dynamics. It sounds like they are a cleaner injector around town - the POD's waste a lot of fuel "hazing" at idle and low RPM.

For 190's you will be OK with a turbine housing swap if you just want the power to play with empty. If you're gonna tow with it, you ought to upgrade the compressor side too.

That's about what I get in town. Out on the highway it'll do 19 if I keep it at 70 or below.
