Idles too fast!

My idle surges between 1000 to almost 2000 rpms. I have read the other posts concerning high idles, but they seem to be related to pump tweaking. I have a totally stock pump with no tweaks or mods whatsoever.

The linkage is fine with no binding, and the lever does contact the idle stop screw.

Any help would be greatly appreacitated. I need this truck to pull my stock trailer. Any shops in Mesa, AZ anyone knows that does good work on 1st gens.

Thanks,
Harley

Isnt' A to Z Diesel in Mesa? Fred Swanson does some work around here and is very knowledgeable too. Hold out for some post, you should be able to sort this out yourself.

Sounds like an internal problem in the pump. :(

The pump is a remanufactured unit, installed by the previous owner. I've had this truck about 1.5 years. The pump has good paint on it and doesn't leak anywhere.

My thoughts: Enough fuel is passing though to raise idle speed to about 1900 rpms then drops to 1200 then back towards 1900. Internally, there must be something to regulate the fuel. Something that is stuck or broken. Fuel Pin, Diaphram, Springs, governer????

Since the pump is fairly new, I should be able to replace/loosen whatever is broken/stuck.

I've done the usual carb rebuilds in the past, I should be able to do this, How hard can it be? (encouragement needed here)

It sounds like something is broken or worn in the governor.

Several guys on the board have had their pumps apart and put them back together.

PM me for a link to a VE rebuild thread. It's not family friendly so I can't post it here.
