I95 traffic sucked!

Hello I drove from Raleigh to Pa. for a wedding last week and after Richmond it was stop and go. Took the beltline in DC to 270 through Hagerstown to I81. Those of you going to Carlisle, plan for this. I could do this trip in around 7.5-8.5 hours. It took about 11 hours. I have not done this in 8 years maybe that is why. Rich

Yup. It sucks on that road. I spent 11 hours on it traveling on avg 30mph coming back from NC.

I usually avoid it by going US 78 or PA turnpike.

I hated the drive when visiting my buddy in PA when I was stationed in Camp Lejeune. The cops in Virginia were really bad too.

I run that way about 12 times a year, and I avoid Baltimore and DC at all costs.

If you are coming up I95 to Carlisle, get off at Front Royal, right past Fredericksburg VA, and get on 17, take that to 66, then 50 to I81

All easy driving roads, no tolls and saves hours!

the Richmond - D.C. stretch on I-95 has been horrendous for years, as NJTMan noted. There's rarely an accident, it's just VOLUME. Best to get through that stretch at the first crack of a sparrow's fart

It was in 2003, so may not apply today, but I drove out to NYC from Phx and then down the 95 all the way to Key West, with the worst of it in Florida, especially the Miami area. Of course, the fact that there is a toll booth every 20 feet didn't help...Mark

Yeah I was planning on the hwy 17 route but my copilot (wife) wasn't paying attention and we took a detour around DC. I've done that route before but I got distracted with the traffic jam. In 2003 and 2004 it wasn't like that. I'm going to try to get my truck ready and make the trip to Carlisle next year. Rich

I have been driving from Smithfield VA to Alexandria VA and back since 1973. I 95 is a hopeless wreak. Even route 1 gets bad if there is a problem on 95. Driving an old beater like my W350 helps by pure intimidation. Most people take one look and realize that they don't want to trade paint.
