I found a 4bt today

Tonight I went and looked at a chevy stepvan with a 4bt and a stick trans in it. The shifter had R,L,1,2,3 does anyone know what trans that this might be? I am thinking about putting the engine into my 90 half ton gasser to make something different.

Yep, if Chevy NP435, if Ford, T19

You ought to look into a 5 speed though, if you are not ******* it, a NV3500 will hold up.

That overdrive is almost necessary, I top out at 62 MPH with my NP435....

Sorry to interupt this thread with a question, but what is a 4bt??? is it a diesel motor??? is it a good motor to have??? who made them???

The diesel I drive is my first and I am barely scratching the surface of what I should know about it.

If it's fully syncronized it's the Ford pattern Borg/Warner T19
If it's not the the most common one from GM was the SM465.
If the engine is tilted toward the passenger side it usually but not always indicates a GM transmission.

The engine is not tilted it is straight. I don't intend to use the trans I just wanted to know what it was. I want a 518 auto.

In the chev bread vans they used an sm420 or an eaton I believe. the np435 was not used in the bread vans as far as I know. The ford manual versions used a BW t19 4 spd. The trans is usually tilted towards the driver. Is it a 4bta as in aftercooler? A lot of people are looking for these engines, me included. Don't throw anything away connected to the engine including the motormounts. you will probably need them. The 4bt(a) came stock with 105-120 horses and 295 ft lbs torque. The pumps are just like ours minus 2 lines. VE up to 93 and inline later. The nv3500 5 spd trans won't hold up to them long, too much torque.

It should be an SM465 Chevy NEVER EVER used a NP435 to my knowledge, and i'm pretty sure the NP435 is an LD trans anyway and i think the 4th is O/d ?

There's a 75% chance it's a VE.

It's very rare to see a P-pumped 4bt

Yes, they did. Well the not necasarily Chevy but the General did. They used some NP435s in the 60s and early 70s in some GMC trucks, They are easily Identifiable by the aluminum top cover. They are scarce though, I actually had one in a parts 67 GMC. The NP435 was just you run of the mill granny low 4spd so no OD. Dodge and Ford both used the 435 widly

To the OP who built the running chassis?

Chevy used SM420s up til 67 then went to the SM465

I have no clue about Fords though.

It is a chevy chassis I am not to sure of the year though. I might go take some measurements after work to see if it will fit on my trailer. If I do I will try to see what year it is.
