I did it and now have ?????
 
I bought the 3200rpm spring today[guitar] ....well sorta. It is coming in tomorrow.[redface] Now my questions are:

Can I replace the spring without a S wrench to loosen the pump?
And what can I use instead of a S wrench?

Nobody around here carries S wrenches and it will take anywhere from 2 days to a week to get one. All I want to do is be able to do the spring without forking over more money or waiting till the weekend.

I didnt need to use an s wrench to do the governor spring. all you need to do is follow the sticky that tells you how to do it. timing is what requires the pump to be unmounted(s wrench neeed). for the gov spring you have to take off the four allen bolts that hold the pump top on thats all..

When I watched mine being done (Thanks Daves- both of them) there was no "S" wrench in site, that is to do timing:cool:

It's easier if you retard the pump all the way, but you don't HAVE to do that.

Truer words have never been spoken. Listen to the almighty mahawannadiesel and get the s-wrench. It makes the swap so much easier, I know cause I tried it without retarding the pump and it didn't give me the room I needed. I bought the set ($15) and it made my spring swap a lot more enjoyable[laugh] [coffee] .

FWIW, I have a set of cheap shorty metric wrenches. I took the 13mm and cut it in half. I set that on the hard-to-get-to nut on the pump, then prop a punch on it and smack it with a 3lb hammer. It's worked on my pump plus a couple more that have never been touched. I reinstall with a lockwasher and have yet to have one come loose. It definitely helps to retard the pump to do the spring....but like Dave said, it's not necessary. I've done it both ways.
