HX35 options

Ok I just picked up a hx35/12cm-wg and a 14cm-wg housing. I've done alot of reading and there are alot of opinions on what housing is better. I tow around 8k alot. I'll be gettin a 366 spring shortly and the 4" exhaust is all but ready to go in.

So what'd be better 12cm or 14cm. Or mabey either ported? and whats the deal with porting the WG opening bigger what does this accomplish?

For now I'm goin to leave it non I/C and do a 3" crossover. I have a 351VGT thats goin in , but that"ll be a winter project....I need the truck to tow this summer.

Since you have the 14, might as well use it. If you have stock injectors, I wouldn't even worry about the wastegate, just bolt it closed, or leave the actuator unhooked from any manifold pressure. Stock injectors you probably won't even see 25psi manifold, heck even bosch 190 injectors won't put you out of the map on the hx compressor wheel.

Oh wait, you mentioned no intercooler, so you must have a pre 91.5 truck? If so then you may want the wastegate. Get yourself a manual boost controller (MBC) and drill a hole through the dividing scroll in the housing so that all 6 cylinders will get "vented" during wastegate operation.

So drilling a hole in the hot side of the housing will help with gating all cylinders? How big of a hole?

with the 2 variations you have to choose from, the 14cm would probably be the best route to take since you have a manual. around town it'd be good for spooling and as far as towing it's not small enough or THAT restrictive and therefore you'd see lower EGT's. if you could find a 16cm that'd be a good choice as well. i could be wrong though. what do all you other gurus think??

oly fab how are you going to hook up the HE351VGT isn't that a computer driven varible wastegate setup? You might want to get the HE351CW it's a simple setup and fairly simple install. Good luck with your truck.

Via a wastegate actuator.I've seen a couple done like this. It'll be fully manual.

my W350 crew cab had a gated hx35/12 with pod's, 366, bank$ ic, and a turn or two on the pump. it would run 900-1000 deg pulling 7-8k enclosed trailer on flat ground at 65mph. i really liked the 12 housing for around town fun. without the pod's and/or turning the pump down a bit, i think it would have been fine without the ic.

I had a non-gated 16 HX-35 in my '92 with Bosch 185s and a turned up pump. I think you'd be fine with a wastegated 14. I wouldn't do the 12.

If you're still at stock timing on your VE pump, you should look at advancing it a bit.
