HTT Stage IV how-to and impressions

I got my HTT Stage IV today, so I decided to do a write-up with pics for anyone who hasn't done it before.

Tools: 3/4 socket (must be 12 pt) and breaker bar or ratchet to hold it, 13mm socket, 7/16 wrench, 8mm wrench, in. lb. torque wrench

Start by taking off the intake to the turbo and the clamp for the compressor outlet, then taking off the clamp for the downpipe and loosening the v-band clamp holding the compressor housing on.

Rotate the compressor housing to where the outlet points almost straight up (to clear coolant lines on an auto) and slide it off.

Put the 3/4 socket on the end of the shaft on the turbine side to hold the shaft. Put the 13mm on the compressor nut and remove the nut (REVERSE THREADS). Slide the compressor wheel off the shaft. If you're putting on a Stage III or lower you can skip to putting the new wheel on.

Next loosen the four 8mm screws holding the backing plate on the center section. Take the backing plate off.

The baffle and oil slinger will need to be moved from the old backing plate to the new one. Slip the baffle off, then pop the slinger out.

Compress the piston ring on the slinger and push the slinger firmly into the hole in the new backing plate. Slip the baffle on, then install the plate. Slip the new compressor wheel on the shaft and torque the nut down (REVERSE THREADS) to 150 in. lb. if it's a 6-point nut, 135 in. lb. if it's a 12-point nut.

Put the new compressor housing on with the seal (either the old or new, depending on what you got) and the clamp, clock it to the position it needs to be, install the other clamps, hook the downpipe back up, and enjoy the whistle! :D

I'm up to 40psi boost, down to 1250* EGT's, and the truck gained a little power. My sister described the whistle as "ear-piercing". Also, the turbo no longer "barks" the way it used to; it just spools down smoothly. I'm very happy with the upgrade.

very nice write up. what made you choose the stave 4 vs the stage 3? and do they make you send in your old backing plate as a core?

Thanks for the great tech article! I hope I need this same information very soon....?

Gman,
Great writeup!! Excuse my newbie stupidity, but where did you buy the HTT Stage IV setup? I just bought my 93 CTD in early July, so I am digesting all I can here :D

HTT is www.htturbo.com

Micaiahfied, thanks much for the url for HTT!

Excellent work, Tom! This one's going in the sticky. :)

I talked to Paul at HTT about the differences between the Stage III and IV, and he said the Stage IV would cool a bit better because of the bigger exducer. I decided to go with the IV in case I add more fuel in the future. I'm glad I did, as EGT's are still around 1250 with the IV. I didn't have to send my backing plate in.

Great writeup and excellent pics!

Am I the only one that's thinking 1250 is a little hot for stock injectors and a big hybrid?

That's a first rate write-up....the pics make it VERY easy to follow and understand.....good job...:D:D

I wasn't too surprised by that. The EGT would drop if he went to a 16 cm housing or got the wastegate working. With the AFC mods he's pushing more fuel than most intercooled trucks with stock injectors.

I can hit 1300* on level ground with the Stage III and stock IC injectors...and that's with W/M. Without W/M I can hit 1400* on an incline.

1250* while pushing 40psi boost on #2 only sounds pretty darn good to me! [coffee]

I was under the impression that a Stage IV's all had wastegates?
