Anyone know what the torque specs. should be on the 2 9/16 axle tube nut on my dually to replace the drum?

i have seen two nuts, one using a folding tab lockwasher, and a nylock with a u shaped barb pin that installs in the key way cutting into the nylock, for used bearings, nylock, spin drum while torquing to 75 lbs, loosen nut 1/5 of a turn out install nylock, with lock tab washer, torque inner nut the same, loosen 1/4 turn, install new washer into keyway, torque outer nut 150 lbs, lock washer. chech for hub thrust prying in and out, should be no bearing freeplay.

 

FSM calls for 120-140 ft-lbs, then back it off 1/3 turn.

Every one I have ever removed has had a groove cut into it's face, from the outside wheel-bearing cutting into it, thus loosening the adjustment over time.

One of the popular 4x4 supply houses, whose name has left my weak mind, has the good kind, two nuts and folding tab lock-washer, for replacing the junk nylock ones.

 

I have noticed the groove in the back of the nylon lock nut and thought the bearing was cutting into it. By torquing the nut and then backing it off 1/3 of a turn seems like that will leave an awful lot if play in the bearing, I think the last time I had them off I snuggled it tight with my 1" breaker bar probably about 120 foot pounds and then backed it off until it still turned free but there was no play in the bearing probably less than 1/8 of a turn though.
My last Chevy with a corporate rear end had the 2 locking nuts and I did like them.

I can see where the bearing become looser especially when you are installing new bearings and races.

you can run a bit tighter, all you care about is that nothing moves, ive worked on way too many of those heavy drum configurations, if you go tighter, always check the hub to see how hot the bearing is running. the hub temp/health, without heavy braking, should never be too hot to touch, always check under heavy towing, if theres any play your loose.
