Hot steering colum...Ignition switch?

After I drive for about a half hour the base of the steering colum is cooking hot, right under the ignition switch. A/C on or off does not matter. Fan high or low does not matter. Fan on high will make it happen sooner but I plan on putting high speed on a relay as in the sticky. I wonder if it has something to do with the daytime running lights, what else is there. No big stereo just a cd player and pyro and boost gauges. I have change the ignition switch already for this thinking it was burnt inside causing high resistance(heat) but that did not help.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The ignition wire that feeds the fuse panel is under the plastic cover and is burning up; the blower motor is probably running slower or intermittent also.

You need to install a relay to switch your fuse panel from the battery and have the ignition switch power only the relay.

I was also seeing smoke come from the steering column.

I'm not having trouble with mine yet but sounds like a good thing to do before stuff burns up, how many amps should the relay be? Thanks

I originally used a 70-amp Bosch Relay under the dash and it worked fine but I went and replaced it with a 75-amp Power Relay because the terminals are easier to connect to and they are a bit more Heavy Duty.

Here is a 70-amp unit, they look identical to the common 20/30-amp relays except they come as a SPST and the Term. #30 & #87 are a 3/8” spade instead of a ¼”

This is the 75-amp Power Relay and it looks much nicer under my dash.
