Instead of having an air cooled after-cooler (air-to-air heat exchanger) like on our trucks, that engine sports a water cooled after-cooler (air-to-water heat exchanger).

It sits in place of our intake valley cover on the head and uses the engine's coolant to cool the charge air..

Hope this helps.

KTA made 627rwhp with one of those. Which is absolutely amazing on a first gen.

Would this be able to cool charge air more than, say, a PSD intercooler? Looks awesome. I've never seen one in person, but I can't see a place to put water/meth nozzles. Anyone care to shed some more light on this possible modification?

spring a leak and hydro lock your motor.ahhh. they use those alot in marine app. but they run salt water through them and use pos. charged diodes to reduse corrrosion. good heat exchangers but not practical for highway use.

I'll have to disagree with you fellas. About 80-gazillion or so Bluebird school busses came from the factory with air-to-water aftercooled 5.9's. That's actually the most popular source for the coolers and lines that I'm aware of, other than new from Cummins.

Please educate me.

Is the water, in these aftercoolers, the engine coolant, or a seperate source of actually cool water ??

It would be my thoughts that it would be preferred to have the intake-air cooling water completely seperate from the already hot engine coolant.

they work off of engine coolat, and do an ok job, they were used for years in big trucks, and big trucks went to air-to-air, because it is much better. well at least in my expirence in working on and driving truck.
