Helping a friend ...
I am trying to get some info for a guy I know who has a 1st gen Cummins.
He has a 91 Ram and is complaining that his auto tranny sometimes doesn't want to shift out of 1st for about 4-5 blocks. He claims that it is after firing it up for the first time of the day and it doesn't always do it. He had been advised to check vacuum lines ... not sure where to start exactly.
He is going to have the tranny flushed and serviced to see if that fixes things ... are there any other issues that I could alert him to ??
Thanks in advance,
PISTOL

I think the first thing to rule out would be the linkage, particularly the throttle cable. These are prone to going out of adjustment. Just something to check out while you wait for the tranny guru's. Would the Throttle Position Sensor, contribute to improper shifting?
Not sure if it would or not ... they did the tranny flush and dumped in some additives, so we will see what that did for it.
I hope that did help ... they charged him $132.00 for that. I remember back in the day, the ol man used to dump in a capfull of brake fluid and all the slipping would disappear for a loooooong time... and for a lot less money.

The TPS is used for the 3-4, 4-3 shift timing only. It does not govern the 1-2-3, 3-2-1 shifts.
Your problem is more complicated than merely an "adjustment".
I'm thinking you have a internal seal issue, pressure loss, sticking governor valve etc.
Please take a moment to call Bill Kondolay at DTT.- 800-922-7782
or 604-504-4002. Bill is usually pretty good at helping to diagnose and offer suggestions for repairs or temporary fixes till you can deal with it properly.
I highly recommend him for our trucks...

BTW, have him try putting the trans into "N" while idling for warm up....
These things also suffer from "drain back".
Don't know if this will help or not but it's cheap to try it...

That is a good point ... I had that problem with my other Ram. I would go out to sea for a couple weeks and when I put it into gear to go ... she wouldn't cooperate for a while.
I haven't heard from him since then so I don't know what the result was.
