help: smoking at idle: DO I NEED A TURBO?
Hey guys, today my truck started smoking pretty good. it was a whitish blue smoke and it would only happen when i stopped at a stop sign or something like that. i noticed it after i came off the highway. it happens when you stop at a stop sign or something, then take off. it is a whitish blue smoke and it clears up after you start going.
any ideas?

Well, i just took the turbo apart (split it in two) and i found a bunch of oil around the outside of the housing and the wheel. IS this what is causing the smoke? the smoke smells like oil. is there anything i can do to fix this or anything else that could cause the oil to go into the turbo like this?

Probably a bad seal, but it could also be a blocked drain line. Check to make sure that's clear. Sounds like you are in the market for a new turbo, though.

OK, ill check that. is there a difference between an 89 turbo and a 93? i can get an 89 turbo from a kid in my town if it will work. i think its the turbo cause the shaft has a lot of play in it.

To make everything bolt up, you'd have to use your compressor wheel and housing. The only specialty tool needed for that swap is an in/lb torque wrench. That would be the cheapest way to get you back in business

The non-intercooeld compressor side is a different animal. The inlet is smaller so the intake hose from the air filter won't bolt up and the outlet of the compressor housing doesn't have a lip for the v-band clamp that your turbo has. So, in short, no, you can't slap on the turbo from the 89 But, it's not that much work to swap compressor housings and wheels and then you'll be go to go

well, i can get the intake for the non-IC truck also. is there any easy way to bolt up the turbo and eliminate the V-band clamp?
if not, what is involved in swapping the compressor housing and wheels?
thanks

It is really no big deal to change the housing and wheel from yours to the 89 and yes it may hurt to drive it. If it starts leaking bad then the engine will run on the oil and you will have a run away diesel which is not pretty.
