Help new diesel owner (best oil)

Hello, I am a first time diesel owner. I just bought a 93 with 130,000 miles. My ? is what brand and weight of oil do you recommend? Is it a waste of money to run synthetic oil since it already has 134,000 miles? Also is there anything I need to know about changing the oil filter? Do you fill the filter to try to reduce air in the system? THANKS for your help

You will get many differing opinions when it comes to motor oils. Personally I don't think it is too late to switch to synthetics, I use mobil one truck and SUV myself. As for the filter I would recommend Fleetguard filters (stratapore preferably) and it is recommended to fill them first so as to avoid having the turbo run dry while the filter is being filled up among other things. Hope this helps.

Rotella 5w40 is just fine. Use Fleetguard filters.

Welcome to DTR

Please fill out your signature so we know what truck you have.

If you use the search function you'll find hours of reading about what oils to use, not use, avoid, buy, sell, trade, ect.

Unless you are in the frozen North there isn't a need to run synthetic. Modern 15W-40's cold start OK (meaning decent flow) down to about 10 degrees F. Below that a synthetic would be a good idea if you can't plug in.

Oil brands are alot like toothpaste, they will all do a good job, it`s more a matter of preference IMO. I use either Delvac 15/40 or Delo 15/40, but thats me.

From the scientific view, i think amsoil rates the best on lubricity and breakdown, if you're running long, hard miles btwn changes a synthetic is probably a good choice. I hear alot of the big gun pullers and drag racers run the amsoil but it's PRICEY!!! If you're a fanatic that changes oil before the recc. interval then synthetics might be a waste of money for you. Unfortunatly($$) I'm a fanatic and i love the idea of putting only the best in my truck.

Sorry, I left the 1 out of the 15w40. Yes, Rotella is just fine. I prefill my filter. It tells you do to so in the owners manual. As far as the KDP goes. Yes, it is an issue and you should tab it ASAP. Good luck!

I like rotella 15w40, and valvoline all fleet plus 15w40. Just make sure what ever oil you do use, if its not one of these listed above, make sure the oil is rated for Diesel engine, and turbochargers too.

Only real differance in rotella and dello, is dello has a higher flash point, and no smell.

Yes I agree, Amsoil states conservativly you can run at 3 times the normal oil change interval so the price evens itself out. You WILL notice a difference in the smoothness of the engine. I believe Amsoil runs around $21 a gallon but the protection is worth it. Many independant engine mechanics have stated over and over again that engines that run amsoil are much cleaner inside that all the other engines they've seen.

I run Valvoline p-blue. I like their products. I buy it by the 5-gallon pail. Use it in the diesel garden tractor as well. Just rolled 400k on the cummins and 3500 hours on the little john deere
