Help. Dana 70 bearings and seals Question
After some serious overloading followed by 25 000 km of 5th wheel pulling, my rear seals are leaking badly. I presume that the bearings are in poor shape but have heard no rumbling or growling sounds.
My question is: What is the procedure for removing the axles and changing the bearings?
I know I am going to need new brake shoes and emergency brake cables but would rather get a permanent fix for the leaky seals befor tackling the brakes.
The data on the axle is : 091 29 PD in small type and
-46 M15 MW in large type.
My parts people have three different bearings and seals which could go into a circa 91 Dana 70 and need more information from me. I have not given them the info on the axle -yet.
Any information or advice would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, the only way I have found to get the right parts is to take the old ones in to compare with the new ones.
Also, when you are doing bearings and seals is the PERFECT time to do everything else to your brakes. That way, once you put everything back together, you don't have to take it apart and resk damaging the new seals and installing a new set of axle gaskets.
Just my $.02

fun times, i replaced everythign in my d70(from a ford dually) in my cruiser when i got it. the brearings spun in the housing which is a pits to fix.
just make sure to check everything when you pull it all apart. as for step by step, i did it along with my local gear guy here . parts might be a touch different though since mine was from an 82 ford dually.

The book says to strike the center of the axle shafts to break them free. Mine didn't budge til I took the wheels off (which you'll do in this case anyway) and struck down on the end of the shaft with a maul. Do the seals and brakes all together. AND you might as well go full boat and drain the diff. While in there, I'll say it again, check the center pin (in the spider gears) for excess wear, and make sure the lock pin is secure with loctite.
Have at it!

Bill,
I just completed this job on my dads 93 250,not hard at all with help from guys on this site. You will need a 1 9/16 socket to remove axle locknuts, the locknuts and socket can be purchased at NAPA. The locknuts will be for a Ford F350, located on the help shelf, these will fit the Dodge and are about half the price verses dealer price. Total job including replacing all bearings brakes and turning drums was about $300 using NAPA parts.
