on my 11/90 W-350 SRW i am doing the rear brakes. Dana 71. im trying to replace the wheel bearing seals, and there apears to be a lip on the hub that is smaller than the seal. Make sense? it makes it so the seal wont fit out, and the new 1 wont go in. do i have to beat the lug studs out and seperate the hub from the drum? im lost.
I can't remember if there was 1 or 2 seals, i did a few seals and they are a tight fit, to say the least. Goto an autoparts store and see if you can rent a seal set tool, if not get a big socket just the size of the inner metal part and use that. takes some beating to get it in and practice makes perfect on this type of thing. I destroyed 3 until i figured there must be something to make this easier, and there was(set tool)
Maybe you are referring to the tin shield around the hub. Its purpose is to shield the brake components from contamination, if the axle seal should start leaking. It is a good thing to have there, so don't damage or remove it. I have changed many of those seals, and I know the seal should fit past that shield and into the hub. Maybe you were given the wrong seal. The seal for a 1-ton dually hub is much bigger than a 3/4 ton hub. I'm thinking your truck takes the seal for a 3/4 ton, as it is a SRW truck. Take your new seal and fit it over the spindle, see if the inside diameter is right.
