On my '93 I have a stock H1C turbo on it. It takes a little longer than I would like to spool up. Is there a smaller, waste gated housing that would fit my turbo? What would be the best size? I have read that 12cm is ideal?

With a 5spd you will want a 12 or 14.

How much more performance would a HE351CW give me over the housing and wheel?

Thats hard to quantify really. The 351 has a 4'' exhaust outlet so it can move more exhaust gases out quicker than the stock upgraded turbo, this helps in spool up and lower EGT's. 351cw also has ~9cm2 exhaust housing so it spools quickly. Coupled with the 4'' outlet it could be comparable to a 14 housing i suppose.

I could get a vid of my spool up and possibly capture the sound if you like.

Also, the turbo technology is 15 years newer, compressor wheel is more efficient than the older ones.

Is there a 14cm waste gated housing I could run a 60mm wheel in?

The 14 is an exh. housing, the 60 wheel goes in the compressor housing.

So the 60 wheel will fit in a 14 housing.

1972, your talking two different sides of the turbo, the 60mm wheel your getting is on the cold side (compressor housing) the 14 cm2 housing is on the hot side (exhaust housing)

your wanting to run a 60\60\14?? I dont' know much about turbos just tring to clarify.

you have from what i've read a 54 or 56mm compressor wheel and the exhaust housing should be 18.5 I really don't know if you can put a bigger exhaust wheel on our turbos i know you can upgrade to the 60mm compressor wheel. you can run a smaller exhaust housing to help spool up,

Your stock turbo will have a 54mm compressor wheel and a 18cm exhaust housing. Stock turbine wheel is 60mm.

You want to upgrade the compressor wheel to a 60mm and go smaller on the exhaust housing to increase spoolup.

Not very often do people change the turbine wheel itself.

Ahhh...see I wasn't sure what the turbine wheel size was for sure.. clears a lot up for me anyways lol

Now I understand a little more. I am going to be using this truck to pull 5 to 15 thousand pounds about half the time. We live in mountainous country around here and the only way to get west is to pull over 6 and 8 percent passes. For in town driving I would like it to spool faster. But I don't want the EGT's to get to hot when pulling.


Also, I have a 3 inch straight pipe exhaust. What would I gain by going to a 4 inch system?

Lower egt's and possibly a few pounds boost increase.

Either way you will want the 60mm compressor wheel for sure, not sure how the 351cw housing would handle that pull. I am sure it would do fine since thats what all the 3rd gens have and i see many of them pulling heavy alot.

With the 5spd, 351cw quick spoolup is your best friend.

What wouldn't hold up on the 351cw housing?
