I got a 16 cm housing. Brother got me a new one, as he couldn't find one used. I still have to get the pyro and do a little more work straightening out the crimped exhaust before I can put it in.

How many bolts are going to break when I go to change this?

Does anyone have any tips on the install?

What shop manual are you guys using?

 

i didnt break any bolts.
there is a nice thread on there somewhere with pictures of the install that i used when i did mine.

I have found that it is easier to take the complete unit off, bring it to the bench and bang the hell out of it to get it apart. NOW, in banging on it, please use a rubber mallet or something along that line. I wouldn't suggest using a 5 lb hammer. I did need to tap the housing all the way around it while trying to seperate the parts. It didn't take much but it didn't just fall apart either.

So take your time and enjoy the nice spool up time after you get it back on.

Make sure they know it is for a 1st gen cummins as most GSK's are for 2nd gens.

If you soak the manifold nuts and the housing bolts with PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench, or Kroil they will come out pretty easy. Don't be afraid to tap on the wrench with a hammer, that frees 'em up easier than trying to muscle them off.

Like Scott said, take the turbo off the truck - it doesn't take long and makes the job much easier and safer.

You'll probably need a big hammer on the housing, the first time I swapped housings I beat on it for 20 minutes before it STARTED to come off. Just make sure to keep spinning the turbo every couple taps so you know when it begins to move. Then switch to a smaller hammer and be very careful.
