Grill Change from 91 to 89-90?

Hi All,

Trying to figure out what all i have to do to my truck to get an intercooler in it, only the VIN # says that the truck is a 91 (has the head and the turn signles of the 91-93 style) but the grill has been changed to look older. Also what would some of my options be for an intercooler?

Either the 8th digit of your VIN is an "8" (early 1991 - non-intercooled) or it is a "C" (late 1991 - intercooled). The dealer has told me those are the only differences.

As far as options for intercoolers, there is the factory intercooler at close to $800 > > or there is the banks intercooler at somewhat less. The banks unit looks to fit right in where the factory unit goes. I'm sure that someone that has one will pitch in here. The banks unit definitely looks a lot more sturdy than the factory unit. (I wish I had one.)

If your truck has the "C" in the VIN, I do not know what changes have to be made to install either one.

Re:Grill Change from 91 to 89-90?

I owned an 89 before this 93 so I can see the difference in the grills. The front end clips of the 89-90 series are different than the 91 and up units as to the distance from the grill to the rad area and the headlight position. If all that was changed was the grill then you may be in luck with the fittment of the intercooler by just getting a more recent grill. If the whole clip was removed and replaced, then you will have to take out the grill and have it shaved thin to allow clearance for the intercooler and re-positioning of the A/C cooler.

Now some other news.. DC has basically discontinued "new" replacement intercoolers for the first gen pickups. You will have to go to Bank$ or another vendor to get one. Bank$ is cheaper than factory and from what I have heard, pretty darn good items.

The other fun part will be getting all the plumbing from the turbo to the engine, such as the outlet elbow from the turbo and the intake horn to the manifold. If you go Bank$ you can get the complete kit with all the brackets and plumbing.

J-eh

Well, I think the radiator support is the part that is different. It includes provisions for the intercooler. When we were getting my dad's 91 cummins (it has an intercooler) which had previously been wrecked it cost us about a few hundred bucks for the radiator support due to it being different for the intercooler.

Lil Dog is right, there are no more "new" intercoolers coming from DC. All that is available is "recores" or used/not leaking ones.
My brother just went thru this a month ago... he ended up going with Banks.
He said the install was pretty straight forward and not a big deal.... he has a 92 CTD.

Bob.

I put an aftermarket intercooler on my '89. It came with a bar grill to replace the original.

I know someone that put a second gen intercooler in his early first gen. He does not have A/C and I don't think he had many problems getting it to fit.

Re:Grill Change from 91 to 89-90?

The 2nd Gen idea has come to thought of me and a few other people i've talked to in chat, but as hard as it is to find a intercooler in a JY around here in a first gen, its even harder to find one for a 2nd Gen, i'm not quite sure what route i'll take only time will tell

Well I have found a couple wrecked coolers from 2nd gens but they seem a bit wider at the inlets and the cooler is bigger. If you need the cooling that would be the way to go..
