Got tired of the racket

Saturday night I was pulling the boat home and had to accelerate to merge into traffic on a limited access highway. This particular stretch has a 30 foot high sound abatement wall on both sides for a couple miles. Well, with the windows down the exhaust noise was ear splitting. So, I stopped by at NAPA and ordered a muffler and installed it yesterday evening. The installation took about three hours including "unwelding" the old glass pack and cutting the pipe plus a complete redesign of the hangers. I still have a mild throaty exhaust tone and the back pressure is minimal. What is missing is the rappy bark of the glass pack which I will miss like a tooth ache and that annoying harmonic is gone as well. The muffler is for a school bus with 4 inch diameter, offset, inlet and outlet designed for an 8.3 Cummins. It is an all weld construction and cost $153.00 tax included. The overall lenghth is something over 32 inches and the take out was about 29 inches. The case is oval and measures about 8 x 11. The part number is 22004 if anyone is interested. I did install the muffler with the wide part running up and down instead of flat because the exhaust pipe was bent for no muffler and the offset was to much to install it in the normal or conventional manner. I drilled a 1/8 inch hole in the end plate near the bottom to drain off any moisture build up on those short trips to the package store.

I won't say too much because I'll probably end up having 'soft ear syndrome' too haha

But right now I'm young and still like the noise. Ah well, it's all good. Still Cummins power even if you TRY to muffle it.

I have a 4" Racing muffler- can't tell you what kind as I got it from a guy that put stacks on (second gen) and gave me the muffler on back with a 5" stainless miter tip. Still sounds good and with my comute the drone from a straight pipe would have killed me

I'm glad you like your set up now

I put about 6k behind my truck for 600 miles. If I were to tow regularly, I'd definitely invest in a muffin. Do what makes you happy

Yep, nothing wrong with a muffler. If I used my truck for long trips or towed with it, there'd be a muffler on mine.

There's nothing wrong with silent running.

It is nice to hear nothing but six cylinders Gittin-It save a nice turbo shrill in the backgroung.

I was running a 4" turbo back straight pipe, sounded nice at idle. After towing 450miles with an ear bleeding drone in the cab and getting off the throttle really quick with any glimpse of law enforcement. I bought one of those MBRP straight through mufflers. It still has a nice sound to it but minimizes the drone and if mr police man pulls me over I have a nice muffler down there to show off.

I went and picked up a load of manure yesterday and the guy that loaded me up kept comenting on the cool sound of my truck( he was a ferd guy). Then he noticed my 5" tip and asked if I could fill it with smoke . I said sure and romped on it and gave out a cloud almost as black as wannadiesels avatar . he had a smile on too.

Just had to share,
Michael
