Got er Home!

Drove back to Denver from OKC last nigh. Whew, what a ride! Truck ran beautifully, and turned out to be everythng the seller claimed. Averaged 19.5 MPG. Seems pretty good for 4.10 gears going uphill most of the way. I think I'll be quite happy with it.

There is only one real flaw I can find so far, which I understand is a common problem on these trucks - steering a bit sloppy. It's lined up good, doesn't pull, tracks fine in the groove - just loose, wanders. I remember seeing a thread here a few weeks ago that pointed to a TSB or maybe a link to that TDR site as I reacll, with a procedure for adjusting on-center in the steering box. Spent a few minutes searching just now but couldn't find it again. Can anyone refresh my memory?

I'm gonna go ahead and put a Borgenson shaft on it when I get time, but want to get the box adjusted first.

Tks...

I don't know if I could drive one with less than 1/4 turn of slop in the wheel.

It's much more likely that the lower joint in the steering shaft is worn out. Dodge sells the pieces to rebuild it for about $10, but due to the angle that the 4X4's mount the box the factory style joint doesn't last long. The Borgeson or Flaming River shafts are better on the 4X4's. 2wd trucks have the shaft going in almost totally straight and the stock parts last a long time.

Yeah, I already confirmed the steering coupler is shot. You can grab it by hand and see the play in there just wiggling it around. But it is off center as well, because the wheel sits (on average ) about 30 degrees to the left going straight down the road.

I had to rebuild that coupler on my '74 Duster last year and was surprised to see the same coupler still being used - on a "91 W250, no less! It is amazing to me that some engineer thought it would be OK on a 4WD truck. No wonder they all go bad so soon.

Seeing as how you ride is SOOOOO original I would be tempted to keep the stock coupler, crappy as it is. But if you are interested in industrial strength see here

and ck out the pic in my gallery. Or you could put in a Borgeson wich is a nice but slightly more expensive alternative (had a Borgeson in my now sold 86 W250, can`t say a bad thing about it, very nice, but not greaseable)
