Got a DANA 70 3.07......
Its a 1989 dana 70 3.07 rear. Is there a way i can see if its a really a 3.07 without taking the cover off? any numbers stamped or a tag? Also its laying on the ground and i dont feel like pickin it up to spin axles. is there a way to see if its posi? thanks
Not worth a lot. I've seen D70's on craigslist for $100 - $150. Most guys don't want them because they're so heavy and they don't need the extra strength over a Dana 60. If there's a tag on it, look up the number on the Dana Expert site.
Really? So I have in the range of $4k in differentials? I don't think they are worth that much. For one 3.07's are not a very desirable gear, unless you just want to go fast. No good for towing, especially if you have an O/D auto truck you'd build more heat with the high gear and cost yourself some tranny cabbage. 727 aren't as bad with the 3.07 ratio. If they are that valuable, I have a matched pair, D60 and a LSD D70 w/3.07's for sale. $2000 +shipping.

Only thing a 3.07 rear is good for is somebody who doesn't have overdrive, or plans on doing a lot of unloaded highway driving and wants the MPG.

I paid a grand for my 3.07 axle with a posi. If you have the 727 that is the only gear you can run. Took me 2 months to find one so when I did I jumped on it. You can't buy any new ones. My backside still is sore over that one, but what are you gonna do. If you need one you need one.
I think $400 for a good D70 3.07 is fair. If it was closer and a dually, I might be interested.
I like the idea of a 3.07 ratio, esp if one has a 5 speed. 1st is low enough to get almost anything moving, and if 5th is too high, drop to 4th (which ironically, is close to a set of 4.10s with OD). Best of both worlds, IMO.

I drive a 3.07/5sp combo. Its fun. Not great for towing, have to wind it out in gears to keep it cool. I dont tow much at all with this truck, other than 4k or so every month or 2. It does provide EXCELLENT mileage. Even with all my fuel mods I broke 28mpg.
I agree, towing with 3.07 with the two piece driveshaft is interesting, when you want to start and accelerate on a hill... I'm going to convert to a one piece now, I've already shorted the front half by about 4 inches anyway.
I think I'm going to stick the 4:10s from my w250 under my w200 and be done with it. A GV and an over/direct/under 3 spd brownie box both will provide about 30 gears albeit many redunant

Wih 3.07's it gets hot and is hard towing 4K, or stuff heavier than that? How high do you have to wind the gears out, and does it make your towing mileage suffer? Do you always get around 28, even if you're going 75-80 down the highway? I'm considering doing 3.07's in one of my trucks, I tow 6-7K max and don't want it to be a problem though.
Richie O, you should have a sore backside that's just plain rape. People need to open there eyes a bit wider and see what's out there. I picked up a D80 dually rear, disc to disc, and leaf springs for a buddy or mine a couple weeks ago for $900. And my old 727 truck had 3.54's and had no problem with 55-60 mph's.
Believe me I looked at every option but I wanted to stick with the 3.07's. That was a few years ago before I was on line. I had the junk yards do a search and that was the only one in the system. I did not want to travel out of state and end up with junk. This one had a 6 month garantee. It always seems when ever I need one I can't find one, and when I don't need one they are every where.
