Getting ready for a road trip

I used to aim for 1000 miles in a day. Dallas to Phoenix. Phoenix to Dallas via Albuquerque. Dallas to Roanoke, VA. Dallas to Cincinnati. Cinci to Dallas.
This trip involves a plan to slow down and cruise. I'll leave work early and run from DFW to Carlsbad that afternoon/evening. I'll play in the caverns the next morning and run over to White Sands for lunch. Afterwards, I'll finish the run to Tuscon.
It'll be that kind of trip where I can screw around and take my time. I gave myself a week to hit LA, pick up a machine, do a Saturday activity, and go back to DFW.

My OEM water pump let loose on me at about 130,000 miles. It happened at 75mph on the Interstate -- every impeller blade lost an ear and the antifreeze was gushing out. That is, I needed a tow truck because there was no limping home. The serpentine belt was damaged as well.
When I bought a replacement unit the technician at Cummins Power South (who owns two Second Gen CTDs) told me the expected life of a water pump is about 100,000 miles. I'm not suggesting you carry a spare water pump in your toolbox, but be aware that our water pumps will last nowhere near the life of the engine.

i did 5000 miles roundtrip in about 3 weeks in december and another 2000 miles in 3 days earlier this month(towing 10k lbs). truck didn't skip a beat. just carry the basics of what you can think of. you don't need extra filters or spare parts. just some tools, wire, fluid, spare tire, jack, and a AAA card(or if your insurance has roadside, i pay $6 a month for it)
as previously mentioned, stab it and steer! spend the time enjoying the trip, not worrying about the what ifs.
