but seriously i think i am going to go with the nv4500. Might as well do it right the first time even it cost more.
No one ever does it right the first time.

If your staying under 425 hp, stay with the Getrag. Nothing wrong with it. I don't know why you would even consider if it's lasted this long. An nv4500 may not have done any better.
How long will it take you to wear out the next one?

I recommend using 5 quarts of oil.

I now have three rebuilt on my garage floor. Can't decide to sell or keep.

I dont know what all of the gearbox fuss is all about. You will have WAY more problems with your clutch that you will with your tranny.

Getrags are hella simple to overhaul. Nothing in them is "weak"

Pull them apart and you will see. Dont have any 1st hand on the nv4500.

And to the fella that wrote the getrag 360 having a 360lb-ft torque rating... Hmm, does that mean the nv 4500 has a 4500 lb-ft rating?

Not to make anybody angry, but...

If I was going to swap an auto for a manual, I would get the NV4500. They are quiet and shift like a car. The 98 and newer style, with the bolt on shifter stub, is the ideal setup.

The Getrag is a beast, don't get me wrong, just a little crude.

i'd keep the getrag, one of mine has 280k on it reshimed twice, works fine used for towing,
the other was used since day one for a concrete biz, and the rear seal went out ran low on oil and welded the input bearing to its race and spun in the case @ 228k fixed case replace input shaft nose cone and bearings and running it now, again no issues,

I'm not the one who wrote it I just quoted it but you're comparing 2 different transmission names made my 2 different companies. Kinda like apples and oranges really, that logic isn't going to work... :P

On the other hand, I've read somewhere (can't remember where) when I was researching transmissions that the nv4500 has a torque rating of 450-460 ft/lbs. I guess that's not saying much even if it's true because we all know both the gutbag and the nv4500 can both handle a buttload more torque than they are rated for.

I've had problems with my NV4500HD - that is if you count changing the Syn GL4 every 18K a problem. I purchased mine from Quad 4X4 in Roberts MT as a complete kit. Since installation I have had zero problems with the swap.

The Castrol Syntorq (or GM equivalent) required by the NV4500 is quite pricey. If you know the history on that trans behind the Cummins, it goes to show it was under specd' for the application. Dodge contracted New Venture to do development testing for a Getrag replacement. It was strictly a money-saving move. They found during shift stand testing it burned up synchros like there was no tomorrow and generated insane heat levels with Cummins torque applied. A few changes were made to enable it to survive, chief of which was the Syntorq fluid spec.

The only reason a Getrag ever overheated was because it was shimmed too tight or ran low on fluid.

I would say that the biggest downfall of the getrag are the counter shaft bearings, they're kind of small to take a large load in 5th gear towing.

A pressurized feed lubrication system to both input and output shaft bearings would be awesome!

I had to rebuild mine because I overheated the rear output shaft bearing while towing in 5th in the rockies grossing ~16k. My bad. I still made it home, it just started whining. In fact I even made another trip to SD but I made that trip in 4th gear only, 5th on downhills. So it really was still going, it was just a little whiner. haha

Keep em coming guys! It seems we have a split crowd! Hey Apwatson, I see you have this setup (HX35/16CM/60mm compressor). Do you like or love it? I thought about a 60mm upgrade in my stock rock along with a 14cm nonwastwegate but I was told to not go past a 16cm for EGT's during towing! Any complaints? Robert

x2

Chrysler Engineers Tested both the nv4500 and Getrag as possible candidates for the 1st gen dodges. The only reason it was put in 2nd gens along with a smaller stamped cover clutch as opposed to the expensive sachs was cost.
