Getrag preload
Finishing up my rebuild and was checking the preload, however when I tap the bearing race to seat it and then measure I get .223 on one side and .227 on the other side of the output race. So I tap the .227 side and recheck now its .223 but the other side goes to .227🤪.
Should I just split the difference and add .008 preload? Btw, if anyone was curious the Loctite 515 or 518 gasket make has about .002 build when torqued. |
Are you sure you don't have a piece of crud under the race?
|
Positive. Its like the race slightly rocks on the bearing in the case. Once the rear housing is installed it will equal out as the back of the race will sit in the groove..... I hope.

I know when i did my NV4500 I had to "load" the bearings under pressure then check pre-load, time consuming and a hassle but the only way to do it right. So far I'm almost at 100K km's on my rebuild and so far so good.

The seating should be by gravity to do the measurements, do you have it nose down into a hole in the work bench etc, with gravity pulling everything together?
|
Its face down. Then i just use a nylon hammer and tap around the bearing to make sure its seated. Its gotta be a tad of rock in the race. Which ever side i last tap is lower than the opposing side. Ive decided to just split the difference.
