Getrag issues part 2

Many of you will remember when the pin fell out of my shift rod a few months ago. I had to drain my getrag to fish the pin out etc. Anyways the oil was only a few months old. With my problem of getting locked in 5th gear I decided to pull the shifter out again and look through the hole to see if anything obvious was going on ( I got lucky the last two times). Everything looked good so I drained my oil and I have a bunch of bronze bearing material suspended in the oil. I have the manual but it doesn't specify which bearings are bronze. Anybody have any idea of what went south on me? I'd like to order the parts before I pull it apart to save myself some down time. I know I know you always find something else that you need once it's apart but I figured I'd try. If it all works out who knows... maybe I'll buy a lottery ticket too.

I don't now for shore..but i think that the only gold (bronze) in the tanny is syncronizers rings.........was it hard to get out of revers allso. just thinking that if the 5th gear fork was bent that it might bind trying to get it out of 5th gear. and could be the bronze in you oil!!!!
My tuck is just the opisit, just the waight of my hand will cause it to pop out and goning down heal w/ex.brake on i have to holed light pressure on the shift!!
If i rebuild my tranny i think that i will add a washer to the spring and detent ball of 5th

Just gessing, haven't HAD to rebuid a getrag.......Yet

Gotta be a syncro. That's the only bronze in there as far as I know.

The sad thing about it is that the previous owner paid $2700 for the dealership to rebuild this trans less than 30k ago. When I bought the truck it had less than 1k on the rebuild and it never shifted correctly. Along with that I found that the dealership put 90w oil in the trans and I drove it for quite some time before I put the correct oil in it. When I called them they said that it's supposed to be 90w oil and whoever says otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about. I showed the owners manual, service manual etc. that showed 5-30 and watched them stammer all over themselves. They wouldn't warranty the work on the trans because the PO had them use non-chrysler parts to save money. I know what dealership to not EVER take my truck to. I guess that I won't know what is wrong until I pull the gearbox out. Ive been avoiding pulling it out for the last year because it's my daily driver.

That is a total bummer. I know mine doesn't shift as nicely as some others I've driven, but I could only afford to replace the 3-4 syncro that was bad. I saw a rebuild kit on e-bay for under 300 with syncros. I may snag that to build my core with. If you're losing brass, you'll need to go through the syncros for sure when you tear it down.

These guys have the rebuild kit also and probably more trustworthy.

There's always gonna be some bronze in the oil, synchro wear is normal - especially on a relatively fresh rebuild. Don't panic. If it's quiet and it shifts without grinding, it's OK internally.

When you say it doesn't shift right, what do you mean?

I've gotten used to it but it doesn't seem right. My main problem is that I get stuck in 5th everytime I put it in 5th. I can eventually grind it and force it into 4th then after that it is good 2-4 as long as I don't use 5th. As far as the bronze in the oil the oil only has maybe 2k miles on it. Something is definately wrong inside and I've never had one apart before so I'm just trying to get a feel of what to look for and what parts to order before I take it out. I can't afford to be without my truck for a week right now.

K.... i don't remember who or what post it was but the guy said that his shifter was bad and was causine it to stick in 5th!!

How he got around the problem was to push the shifter as far to the right as he was pulling it out of 5th, then let it spring back, then shifted it into 4th!

If this works the parts that you need to buy is a new shifter, where it gos into the tranny!!! not a rebuid kit Try it you just might like it
