To the getrag experts

Ok here's the issue( minor I hope). I was driving home last night and when I let off the throttle I heard some grinding noise coming from the tranny. I'm new to the getrag world. I'm going to add some oil to see if it fixes it. Or could it be my new clutch? Thanks

heres what i would do:

get a clean, light colored drain pan. drain the tranny into said pan. if the oil is "oil colored" with a slight metal flake sparkle to it (they key being a slight sparkle!) you will most likey be okay for many more miles. if the oil comes out looking like silver paint with a hint of gold metal flake. yea, well thats bad. if you get any metal chunks out, yea, thats bad, and you should start planning a rebuild. i also suggest pulling one or both PTO covers off during this drain. that way you can get a good look in the bottom of the case for any fragments, or shrapnel that dont flow out the drain. and you will be able to inspect the magnet. if everything looks okay, fill it back up with 4-5 quarts of mobile-1 10w30 (i have ran 5 quarts without issue before). when filling, the easiest, and quickest way is through the shifter hole. if you know how the shifter comes out, you can be done filling and put back together before you can even get one quart in the other ways. and definitely make sure you add the extra quart!!! it is a definite must do!

no dont "add" 5 quarts. fill it with at least 4 quarts after it has been drained. if you hear noise, and you are sure its coming from the tranny, the least you should do is change the fluid. you can just add if you want. its your tranny. and, in my experience, no, it wont make any growling noises if its a little low. it will just run really hot untill it destroys a bearing, generally without warning. how long have you had the truck? have you ever changed the tranny oil?

bye-the-way, that tranny does NOT use gear oil. it uses 10w30 engine oil.

how old is the clutch? what kind of pilot bearing was installed when the clutch was replaced? does it make the noise in every gear?

if the noise is definitely the tranny, i would suspect the pilot-bearing in the flywheel first. and go from there. does it shify well?
