Getrag 360 5 speed issues

I need some help guys. Just got the headgasket done and the oil cooler changed and all seems to running well. Now out of nowhere my transmission seems to be chattering up a storm. It started off just on takeoff in forward and reverse but seems to be getting worse. The transmission was gone through just over two years ago with all new bearings. Could this really be going bad again? I don't beat on this truck and it is pretty much stock. Was it just a **** poor rebuild job? Any thoughts on this? My 93 with a getrag went for a 175,000 without missing a beat before I got rid of it. I'm really baffled on this one.

4.5-5 qts in there? Checked the level yet?

It was spilling out at the fill plug when I checked it. Should I top it off again from where the shifter goes in?

You might want to remove that breather cap and install a breather hose, this way You can still overfill it and Not loose all the fluid.

Breather cap? Where is that ? I remember overfilling it when I put it in after rebuild. I wasn't aware that it could potentially come out through the breather as I have not noticed any leaking.

I think i will change the fluid and fill it from the top. I am assuming that it should be almost spilling out the top through the shifter housing.

Are you sure it's not a clutch or pressure plate issue? Sounds a little like clutch chatter...Mark

You can overfill through one of the highest cap screws on the side plates. Takes some finagling but easier than pulling that shifter off and stuffing it back in. [duhhh]

Thanks for all the feedback. Dropped the oil and found all kinds of shavings. After I wiped the oil off my hands, it literally looked like I had stuck my hands in a jar full of glitter. I would say at the very most that I have put 40,000 miles on it sine it was rebuilt with all new seals and bearings. That just seems way too soon for it to go again. The clutch was new when I had it rebuilt and there have been no slipping issues whatsoever. What a pain in ***.

I think the glitter say it all !

wheelieking71 11-02-2011 11:11 PM

yep, glitter is BAD. set-up is everything in the getrag. set-up, and the pilot-bearing in the flywheel.

gwilming 11-03-2011 07:08 AM

By setup do you mean how they preload or shim the bearings? When I put it in I put the new pilot bushing in but I am pretty sure it was the brass type. I wonder if that is what failed to cause all of this. So is everybody out there in favor of using sealed bearing type pilot bushing? I will be putting a 360 back in. I can't afford the conversion and my last first generation truck had no issues except rust. Btw has anyone ever dealt with jrjeepparts out of Indiana? Talked to him yesterday and he seemed to know his stuff.
