G360 tailshaft nut torque?

I have a G360 trans and yesterday I was going to change the u-Joints. Unfortunately one of the stupid 5/16 head bolts on the trans end didn't want to come out. I finally got it loose enough to get the driveshaft out but I had to take the tailshaft nut off to get the yoke into a vise. I got the bolt out finally and the threads aren't boogered up at all in the yoke.

The specs for the tailshaft nut are 280 ft# and I know I won't be able to get that much torque on it with my wrench. It doesn't even go up that high.

I'm thinking I'll put it back on with my impact wrench set on low or maybe medium. It goes to 800 ft# on high but I don't have any approximation for the medium or low settings.

Has anyone put the nut on with an impact and did you have problems after?

Edwin, I've done it at least twice, and first time had the same worry you have. I used my electric 1/2" drive Dewalt impact, as that's rated I believe for 300 lbs. foot at least, and so that's what I used. No problems whatsoever. Last time was like 5 years ago, if my memory serves me.

One of these days I'll fork out the dough for that yoke holder bar tool, the one you see pics of in the FSM. It holds hat yoke so one can use a torque wrench. I think what I did was hold the yoke in place with a pry bar while I zapped it with my impact.

Thanks. This is a new EarthQuake special from Harbor Fright. It has 1 reverse setting and 3 forward settings. The top setting is rated at 800 ft# so I think I'll chance the lowest setting is around 300.

That is as soon as I can get it rolled back in the garage. Probably tomorrow.

Thanks again.

I had to google the model of my Dewalt gun, to read up on the specs, cause nowhere in the paperwork that came with it did it state its torque capacity. You should be able to do the same I would think.

All I know is the top setting is good for 800 ft#. I have googled the model but I have no clue as to what the lower settings are. I figure I can hold the yoke with a pipe wrench while I zap the nut. If it comes off after a few days...

I know my other impact wrench is so weak it wouldn't even take off the lug nuts from my front wheels. That's why I bought the EQ from HF. It has fairly good reviews I've seen on other boards.

Have a good weekend.
