FWD shifter rattling

My FWD shifter rattles and makes a bunch of noise going down the high way in 2wd, and going up my driveway in 4wd, basically all the time. Does anybody else have this problem and/or have a fix?

Thanks, Aaron

Lots of guys recomend to spray down the linkage with a good spray lube. When my truck was doing that a few years ago it was the rear U-joint.I replaced and it all went away.Just something to remember if the oil trick doesnt work.

My shifter does this too when accelerating at certain speeds. What U-joint was it that you replaced caleb? The rear one right at the diff?

thanks

Also people have replaced some of the spacers in the 4wd shifter with rubber spacers or nylon to stop the rattle noise. I just place a glove over the handle and it keeps it quiet. Cheaper that way.

My little nylon washers were all wore out...

I took it apart, greased the heck out of the whole thing, and replaced the washers with some thin rubber 'o' rings.

That was 6 months ago or so,and it's still nice and quiet.

So far I have gone lowtech and have a little 3" bunje cord hooked under the front lip of the metal boot holder and then to the top of the shifter.

Stops all the rattles for me, gotta whole pack of them at the hardware store for a couple of bucks.

I haven't tried anything yet, but I am going to do the garden hose thing and the oring thing sometime this week.

By the way according to the local dodge dealer those nylon bushings have been discontinued.

Be careful about using a bungee to apply pressure on the shifter. You have wear out the shifting fork.
A welding glove is a great fix for the normal rattle.
I used to have a '77 Macho Power Wagon that rattled like a mother, but after spending $750 on all new drivelines the rattle vanished for good. In fact the trucks max speed went up!
If I have the jack, I would replace the drivelines on my '93 right away!

Good news, I cut a piece of rubber and put in between the shifter and the inside nylon bushing, and I put heater hose on the shift rod, and no rattle!! so far.

Just a couple thoughts on this one.......
The 4wd shifter gate assembly has a nylon looking, square corner horseshoe that fits over one of the gates. The nylon "bushing" is about 1" long as I recall and is located directly behind the moving part that runs in the shifter gate grooves.
You'll have to look REAL close to see it but it's there..
On mine, this "bushing" began to wear a bit more in one spot and less in the other so what Id did was to remove the bushing and swap ends then re-install it.
So far I have had no more rattling.

As an aside I think DC has a replacement for it. (At least there was a few years back.
I think my brother may have installed a new one on his truck. I'll ask him about this and see if he has any part(s) numbers for you.

pb....
