Fuel Tank Straps

My fuel tank's rear support strap broke today, it rusted out.
The fuel tank was hanging down and rubbing on the driveshaft.
There was no damage to the tank fortunately, and I was able to make a temporary repair and get home.
I would suggest that you folks check your straps for severe corrosion
and avoid a potential problem.

You know of one too, oh wait thats mine.

Seriously, I had it happen to another truck, tank about fell out with 3/4 of a tank of fuel, gotta love racket straps. The one the spring hangers rusted off of was thin, but was not about to break soon. I put a new one one on anyway, just to be safe.

Side note: She's painted with POR15 from the cab back. Have to get some pics posted. Looks like it'll be ready for spring fling.

To many Michigan winter and mine broke when removing the tank for frame restoration. The bad news is they are not available anymore from DCX. Nore in the aftermarket, I went to the local steel outlet, got some 304 stainless and made my own. Keep your old ones to be used as templates!

I just replaced the rear hanger on mine. Just happened to look underneath and there it was, hanging by the remaing front strap - hard to tell how long it had been that way - this was the day after a 500 mile trip.[redface]

BTW, I had a line on a set of pulls from a fellow at 1stgen.org (can I say that here?) You could check the WANTED threads there.

Bought a piece of 1/8 x 3 x 36 steel at the local hardware, started to make the fancy notches, and discovered - the notches had worn through the frame support!

So... bent up a little different end to fit the remaining hanger bracket on the crossmember, and it should hold another 16 years.
Bob

p.s. I think that was the only rusty part on my PA truck[whistle]
