Fuel tank

OK I have a couple fuel tank questions

1. I recently noticed my fuel gauge (stock) drops rapidly.
Full to 1/2 tank + about 100miles
1/2 to 1/3 = 100 miles
1/3 to just above 1/8 = 100 miles (fuel light comes on)
1/8 to Empty = 100 miles

I've never paid much atention to this before but it may be that the sender is going south, I'm not sure.

I have run the truck out of fuel twice. Both times it took 27.5 gallons. According to the ownwers manual the tank holds 30 gallons. My normal fillup takes about 24 gallons so I figure the useful fuel load is 25 gallons. It irritates me that non-useful load is so high. Does anyone make a larger replacement tank for the 1st Gens?
Re:Fuel tank

JBOLT I do alot of interstate driving, normally 75 mph have a 92 cc longbox 4x4 your fuel numbers are what my truck does pretty much. My range is just a tad over 400 miles and our fill ups are about the same too just a fyi.

JBolt,
You are not alone. My 92 W250 does exactly the same thing. Kinda worried me at first but after 2 or 3 fills i got the hang of it.

Re:Fuel tank

My 90 is pretty funky like that. I've been told that you can only expect to get 26 gallons in a 30 because of the foam.

Brian

Re:Fuel tank

My gauge must be broke! ;D It reads fairly linear. Roughly 100 miles per 1/4 tank, unloaded. If anything, it seems to go a little further on the second half. Takes about 24 gal. to refill after the low fuel light comes on. I have put as much as 28 gals. in on a refill, and have never run out (so far).

Re:Fuel tank

I've noticed the same situation and thought about it. My guess is that as the tank gets lower, there is less fuel to cool the returning fuel. This returning fuel is warming the fuel in the tank causing it to expand. After it sits a while, the gauge also reads lower than when I left it. Yes, I checked for leaks just to be sure. Sound reasonable?
