Fuel Pins: Bully Dog Vs. PDR

I just replaced my bully dog fuel pin with the PDR custom fuel pin and immidiately noticed a loss in performance and also lost about 4 psi...I was getting about 33 now I only get around 28 psi max. The reason I switched is because I found out that the bully dog pin is made of non hardened steel so I pulled it out and there is a big groove worn into it after a couple months...any suggestions on what to do here? Can the bully dog pin be hardened at all or should I grind the PDR pin a bit more? I should have just ground my stock one but it's too late for that now...I've already sent it back to PDR for the core refund and they don't take returns on thiers

I can't answer your question, however I have a pdr pin. The price difference is why I bought from them. I would just grind the pdr pin a little more. Hope that helps.

Something else about the pdr pin. I was told by their sales rep, and also received it in writing that their pin does not give the HP that Bully dogs does. Could the softer pin be part of how they are getting more HP? With the problems that people have with the BD pin, I'll stick with the pdr pin. JMHO

I think the BD pin will be fine as long as you keep the face greased every so often. I'm still trying to determine exactly how often that is. I also shifted it a couple degrees each time I took it out so it wasn't riding the same path.

Mine's been in there for over six months, been greased twice (including initially, makes three) and is smooth as a baby's bottom.

What kind of grease are you using, just regular multipurpose stuff?

My max boost is 31 psi. This is however pulling my fifth wheel. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Yeah basically, I guess. Just a tiny daub from a tub of Quaker State NGLI-2 bearing grease I've had around for years. I use it anywhere I think a heat-resistant lube that won't wear off too quick might be needed.

off subject as normal with me, but did you send your old pin back as a core? if not try to grind it exactly like the BD pin and see what happens.

I sent the stock pin back yesterday afternoon and put the PDR pin in last night after work...the stock pin can't be ground like the bully dog pin because of the cone shaped taper. I'm planning to take the non hardeded steel bully dog pin to a local fab shop to see if they can harden it for me(after I grind it down a bit more and smooth out the groove that's worn into it), if not I'll get them to copy it and maybe get a few made.

I don't know how familiar you guys are with the issue of the fuel pin getting stuck in the bore. I'm not talking about the BD pin or the PDR pin, but the little pin that rides on it in and out of the pump case. Anyways, I have a theory that the reason this happens, or at least a contributing factor is that the ground pin's angle generates increased friction and pressure coefficients against the harder pin. The tip of that little pin gets burred because of this and then next thing ya know, it's stuck.

Somebody would have to go back and gather all the historical data to figure out whether or not I'm barking up the wrong tree here - see what type pin people having this problem reported. So make sure you lube that face if you grind your own, or grind a harder PDR pin, whatever.

How do you keep the exact angle while grinding the pin or is it not that critical?
