Fuel leaking from ve pump need advise on removing and repairing the pump.
My truck 1991 IC D250 has been sitting for 2 months and today it fired right up. I smelled diesel so I opened the hood and the injection pump was dripping fuel from a couple of places so it looks like the pump needs to come off. Are there any special tools needed to get the pump off? I have a s wrench I used to bump the timing before. I also have the Bosch reseal kit.
I plan to pull the pump reseal it myself and have a shop time and lock it for tdc. This is also one of the pumps that was recalled. Should I reseal this one or get a rebuilt one? The truck has about 150k miles on it so I am guessing this pump would have failed by now if it had the defect. I tried to get Chrysler to get me a new pump under the recall. They would not do it.

You need a steering wheel puller to pop the gear off the shaft. There is also a plate thing with 2 bolts that does the same thing but IMHO the steering wheel puller is more elegant. I'm just sayin.
There's a video on You Tube in 3 parts showing how to R&R the VE pump.

I agree with Rug. I pulled mine and tried to reseal 6 times. I now have it in the shop for rebuild. Wish I had run with the leak. YMMV. N0 reason to take the pump for reset to TDC. You only need to lock the pump before removal. Put it back in same position. Keep the battery disconnected so the engine doesn't get rotated. It will be in time. Also check Amazon for VE pump search. All the tools will show up. They are very reasonable.

What Searcher said is correct except for one thing. There should be a mark on the pump next to the nut nearest the left fender which matches up with the mark on the gear housing. If there is no mark you should mark it with a good scribe or a chisel. You don't have to lock the pump to take it off. It doesn't matter if the engine rotates just line up the keyway with the gear when you reinstall the pump then line up the mark on the pump housing and it will be in time again.
You can order a Bosch reseal kit (DGK-121) which contains all the gaskets and o-rings and reseal the pump yourself. Floating around on the internet is an exploded diagram of where everything goes. I tried the reseal myself but I had a damaged fuel screw which leaked so I just bought a rebuilt pump and installed it rather than mess with it anymore. YMMV is correct. If you do the reseal correctly you save a ton of money vs a rebuilt pump unless you have a friend who can rebuild it for free.

There are lots of threads on here about this. other common parts needed throttle shaft bushing, head & rotor springs my truck had one broken spring and ran fine till it spring a massive leak. when I worked in diesel fuel inj repair we never used the head and rotor springs over on any VE type pump a good number of them came in with broken springs. I got the pump off today! It was not hard to get off at al!. What do you guys use to clean the pump before taking it apart? i tried some simple green and it did fair. Also is it normal for the bottom delivery valve to drip fuel with the lines disconnected?
