No reason you couldn't do that. You will lose the fuel heater by doing that but that may not be an issue for your application.
From what I have recently been reading, I was somewhat surprised at the "open-ness" of our stock fuel-filter; it's more like a "primary" than a "secondary" as far as microns go.
I suggest you keep the stock filter in it's current location and add a second finer filter between it and the injector-pump.
Can someone point us in the direction of a good micron-rating comparison of suitable filters for our use ??

I have 3 filters on My truck right now. One in the tank, one in-line after the pump with a water block filter and one on the engine also with a water block filter. The one on the cummins doesn't have My sensors and I don't really like it where it is so if it wont bother the engine off it goes, I have a heat exchanger before the filter anyway so the one on the cummins is not really needed.
